To Kindle or not - Mar. 19th, 2009 @ 04:49 pm
Okay, I feel the need to clear up a bunch of rumors regarding the Sony Reader, and put it into a more proper light . General reports are that the Kindle is the beats the Sony on a several points. So I wanted to address each point based on my experiences of having a Kindle to play with, owning a Sony reader prs-500 and prs-505 in the house, and both kindle 2 and prs-700 to poke.

PIFTS - pffft I say! Mar. 11th, 2009 @ 05:44 am

Early this morning an blog was made known to me regarding a certain troubleshooting tool for Norton Antivirus known as the Profile Information Framework Troubleshooter (PIFTS). The controversy is a series of allegations that the author is using to suggest that Symantec, the company that produces Norton Antivirus (NAV), is involved in a conspiracy to sell personal information and change your system without your knowledge. His proof is his own analysis and a professional analysis of the executable, indication changes to registry and the scraping of temporary internet files. Additionally, the author cites odd behavior on Symantec's forum site.

Integrity failure... Feb. 24th, 2009 @ 02:52 pm
Up until this morning I stayed neutral on the whole Natali del Conte issue. I had nothing negative to say, but nothing positive. As of today's show I reasses and that's beyond just the prissy atitude of wanting everything new first, and the only person to have it.Also beyond her primping her nipple petals on the pre show.

My problem is her journalistic integrity. Part of my definition of journalistic integrity is doing your own bloody research. In Buzz Out Loud today she mentioned doing a review comparing the New Kindle with the Sony reader. Neither in the review or on BOL did she say which Sony Reader. Looking up the vide I gather she used the PRS-700. I am upset because on the show she said the Sony reader needed the pc program to get content on. That's utterly wrong. In the video it was simply no wireless downloading with out the software. More true, but imprecise and stretching it.

Some facts: PRS-505 and PRS-700 mount as standard usb memory devices. So content can simply be copied in any OS that suports thumb drives. People may point out the difference about being download from the stores, which frankly is irrelevent. The Kindle has to come from the store due to DRM. The sony reader suportsmultiple open formats in addition to LRF (libre reader format) which was inherited from their old readers the libre release in japan early this decade. As the format is that old, there are plenty of converters allowing you to buy prc or lit books as well, and convert them. As a result I don't see cataogues as an isue more of an annoyance. Inaly touching on the wireless download. For the last and final time (I hope) Verizons technology is a deadend and was given up in most parts of the world. As a result the kindle is a very regional solution at best.

This kind of journalistic one side man ships shows either a lack of neutrality, or of research, both of which really make it difficult for me to se her as any different from several reporter flakes that making their living by maing beatoff material for zealots.

Finally I missed people in the other IRC channel I announced due to headaches from this experience, and for that I am mifed and sorry.

A few thoughts on Torrents. Feb. 20th, 2009 @ 02:07 am
Today Buzz Out Loud, in episode 914, asked the question is The Pirate Bay (TPB) more like Google the search engine, or YouTube (Google) content provider.

I made the quip that TPB doesn't host content, while YouTube does.

I wanted to expound on that a bit more. Or better yet take it to it's simplest level.

What does Google's search engine actually do? When you make a search it turns your search into basically a vector, it then searches it's database and returns links pages that have been indexed and have a similar vector. Therefor, what is stored on Google's servers? In the most simplest view, just a mathematical identification that points to content. [DISCLAIMER: I am ignoring caching here, because in that manner Google does actually store content and is open to DMCA action for that subsection of it's operation]

What does TPB's search engine do? Using much simpler keyword based searches, it links you to files that they store called torrents. Torrents are a hash that can be used to bittorrent clients to find other bittorrent clients that have the file which the hash describes. Which is to say, its a mathematical identification which can be used to find content.

So, mathematically speaking, both parties store and make available mathematical identifiers to allow people to find content they wish to find.

QRCodes and Microsoft's new tag Jan. 8th, 2009 @ 04:56 am
Ok .. so I've gotten enough information that while I can call MS's tags interesting they are a failure in my book.

So Microsoft has released it's own bar coding system that among other things uses high color contrasts to make the various codes different. I was wondering to myself how this is different from QRCodes, and what I was told (indirectly) that they are more accurate and smaller. I cannot attest currently to the accuracy issue. I've been using QRCodes for over a year now and have had much luck. As for the size I call this FUD based on the picture I've seen in the resource. The picture Microsoft is showing shows a rather small Microsoft tag beside two very large Data Matrix and QRCode tags. I'd say that based on the data examples the Microsoft tag is <10 bytes of data. I cannot speak to the DataMatrix but the QRCode is 4 times the physical size, and based on the encoding markers it could hold up to 1 k of data. Big difference. In personal experience I've managed to put a 18byte message into the same size. (Actually, when it comes to size the MS Tag is bigger; .625" vs .5" for QRcode V2)

Another issue I take is that the MS Tag works through a centralized approach access MS servers to translate the code into a URL, that you then link to get the information. I see several issues here, namely being control and inability to use the feature offline.

QRCode
Pros
+Up to 70% of the code can be damaged and the information recovered with normal error correction methods
+The spec allows the size to grow with data
+The spec allows for a micro QR code under 35 characters that is the same size as the MS Tag (bit.ly anyone)
+Doesn't need color, therefore simple printer and stamps work with this process
+Non centralized
+Can store data in any form
+Can retrieve data offline if it's encoded in the code
+Free (technically patented but owner refuses to exercise patent such that people will actually use it)
+Already in major use for parts labeling
+Software and embedded hardware for decoding/encoding is already widely available
Cons
- Not wide spread outside of Asia for consumer use
- There is a possibility that some phones cannot read the codes (I can't verify this as even my cheapest phone works fine)
-Black and White can have contrast issues

MS TAG
Pros
+ Color could be used to condense information
+Color may make it easier for phone scans
+ All Tags are smaller than many QRcodes. (Size restriction due to bit.ly style url redirect)
Cons
- Centralized
- Hints that the system to create the tags will become pay only eventually
- Incapable of working offline
Questions
* What kind of error correction (if any) does it use?
* Will money become a factor?
* Will Microsoft be able to force consumer adoption any more than QRcodes have?

Bottom Line:
I don't foresee adoption on a wide scale, and even if it is, it will be another US centric technology. QR Code is superior in most respects including existing deployment but US consumers still don't get it; and probably never will. MS Tags will go the way of the CueCat.

On Vox: Hollywood finally recognizes some new value in the Net Apr. 16th, 2007 @ 03:01 pm

The MPAA may generally treat netizen's as more of an nuisance then an asset, but it hasn't stopped them from adopting many radical ways to generate publicity for all the stolen movies that they are making record profits on. Hollywood's use of movie websites is nothing new, nor is their advertising in IMDB.  In their strive to reach greater audiences, they turned to more community based sites about 2-3 years ago. While still uncommon, you could find various movies making use of MySpace to generate attention, and more importantly user generated  content for up and coming movies.  MySpace, or as I like to think of it the meat market of the next generation, is specifically targeted at the teen demographics that many studios are aiming to hit. For better or worse, it provides wonderful fodder for Hollywood.

Mor recently, as Amber MacArthur highlighted several weeks ago, independant artists have been using Facebook to generate the same sort of following, even if its much more muted. Prevous to that Six Apart manged to help pioneer another medium of advertisment. Shortly before "Blood and Chcolate" was released in the theaters, a sponsered Live Journal account appeared that was being ghost-written for the main character. I found this a great way to not only generate hype, but to shine a light on some of the character expressed in the movie.

With yesterday;s premier of "Drive" stateside, Twitter has been added into the fold. Throughout both the and east coast airings, director Greg Yaitanes (and various cast and crew who swiped his phone) twittered inside facts and fun thoughts to the presence stream. For those that are on twitter, and knew of the promotion, this was a very interactive way to watch a classically one way program. I for one already feel more engaged with the show then I would have otherwise.

Home of the Crackberry, gold of Ted Rogers Apr. 10th, 2007 @ 01:51 am
When I first came to Canada there was only one small issue I had. The cellphone network had the worst competition I had ever seen. Then Rogers turned into a virtual monopoly by buying Fido and becoming the only GSM game ... in the country. Why is this so? Well you can thank the CRTC in it's continuing policy to protect, not the Canadian consumer, but Canadian companies.
People ask me why I still keep my T-Mobile account and phone ... here's one answer :

I think it's time to write to the CRTC and our MP's. Even they should be able to understand this graph.

Edit:Forgot to mention my source.

Work eat brain.... Apr. 9th, 2007 @ 12:49 am
I always thought my day job with my current company was a brain eater. No longer am I on top of events like I was back when working for LISO. Beware of outsourcers for this very reason. Do your research. For outsourcers, the goal is your continued business. This means they manage your problems; outsourcers rarely see the benefit to their bottom line that is gained by providing bonafide solutions. You'll see many consultants pushing for oracle backends, or even domino on big iron, when a simple Ruby on Rails solution is more then adequate. Even when considering scaling, its just as easy and often vastly cheaper.

Why is this you may ask? For one, there is the extended and higher profit margin to consider. Secondly, outsources like to stick to what they know. Disruptive technologies are often dismissed as immature with maturity testing costing too much in the short run. This is why you'll see many financial firms still running dino farms of Big Iron. The truth is by adding a few months of maturity testing and developement, the result will oftenbe a better faster system with a longer life cycle. This is good for the client. A satisfied client will then look to the vendor for bigger and better projects. This is good for the vendor, but often dismissed in short run views.

So what brought this all to a head? I went to sign up for twitter today and found I already had an account from a while back. My brain, so filled with useless information and filling paper work, seems to have dumped important data. I've known for a while now it's been starved of information relative to the movng world of tech, but hadn't realized the full extent. I must find a way to lift my eyes from my feet and place them on the digital horizon where they belong.

All that said and done, another reason for the lack of twitter maybe the lack of updates i get, and reasons to post their. Since its more mind snippits the blogging I'll make a deal with all who link me. I'll actually brain dump when my cell's setup if people will actually read.

To all the unpublished out there Apr. 8th, 2007 @ 10:05 am
There are quite a few aspiring authors on my F-list who've occasionally asked in random about how to get published. Obviously not everyone has the luck of having publishers beating down their door; and self publishing is often a good way to make publishers ignore you in the future.  Perhaps Scott Sigler is one to emulate.

Sigler tried to get hsi book published only to have Warner pull out twice the week before running. He decided to try another approached. Podio books. By podcasting himself reading his own books, he managed to generate a great deal of interst. So much so that not only did he find himself a publisher; but his book had been sitting number 7 on Amazon. His podio books now include small adverts at the beginning and Sigler claims he is making much more income off the adverts then actual book sales.

So maybe it's time to invest in some professional Mic's and a decent mixer board, and join the netcasting revolution.

Thoughts .. and statistics .. interesting argument .. however its based almost entirely on one keystone statistic ...

On average, that’s 22 songs purchased from the iTunes store for each iPod ever sold.

Point of contention #1 :  Every ipod ever sold is a bad metric to begin with ... Of those how many ipods are in use, or even hold duplicate songs ....

Point of contention #2 :  Apple has yet still to prove that they have changed their metrics on what "sold" means.  Last time there was an independant review, sold meant a lot of things. A trade up was a sale. A refurbishment was a sale. A harddrive replacement was a sale. According to these metrics some ipods could potentially account for even more then 10 sales per  physical unit.

So while songs sold by iTunes is a static and well trackable number (maybe) depending on definations ... the number of ipods could be an exponentially expanding number not related to physical units made.

Secondly, I am having the worst nightmares of what could happen to ATi. *shudder* Last thing I want to hear is that my videocard is starting to drop every second and third frame cause of some incompatibility between timing, the drivers, and the HAL. I guess I am just glad I don't hold ATi stock. Cause I'd feel really gyped if it was replaced by AMD stock.

A couple of things. Rather then berating people, maybe these articles should be more about spreading knowledge. Wouldn't the FOSS movement be better if more people were happily taught instead of everything done for them, and then they face berament cause no one bothers to teach.

Second, last I read CentOS was claiming to a RedHat Derivative. An Enterprise 2.0 RH deriviative at that. No where did it mention Fedora Core. What this tells me is that it's based off of others work. So, all the people trying to pass it off as ingenous, its another RH roll-up. Additionally,  I am not sure on RH's enterprise kernal licensing at this point, but I suspect if it is based on a pay version of the Kernal its not supposed to be directly used. To whome it may concern ..

Okay, there has been a lot hissy fitting going on about the recent cogent - level3 fiasco. Lots of people blaming Level 3 and whatnot. So lets get a few things straight.

Here is what happened. "Level 3' and "Cogent' agreed to put up interconnecting links between their two networks back when both were level two  isps. Level two  isps connected directly to the internet backbone, and sell service to level threeisps (AOL, earthlink, mom and pop). Since then "Level 3" has expanded into both level 3 and level 1 isp status. Level 1 status  being they own actually backbone routers. "Cogent" went to level 3 and some level 2.  The previous agreement was basically that as long as tehre is equal traffic due to equal network size, there would be no charges. In otherwords they would have been charging each other but the traffic being equal would have canceled each other's bills ot 0 cents. However, "Level 3" and considerably exceeded  "Cogent's" size. The result, they wanted to make cogent pay to use the links. Pay for bandwidth .. go figure

Anyhow "Cogent" refuses to pay, so "Level 3" has cut off access on the DIRECT LINKS ONLY. Any other Level 1 ISPS cogent uses can still relay. And still do. Problem is Cogent doesn't have enough bandwidth with the other players.

So bottom line. "Cogent" refused to pay for 80% of it's bandwidth. They got cut off. They are trying to operate on the remaining 20% becuase they didn't plan business well. Tough cookies. Now you get hammered off teh internet for not having enough redundant links.

Bad planning means bad customer service means usage black out.

Nuff said.

Conservative commentator Ann Coulter also shot in with such great "fact's" as "It's bovious, if you've listened to the news, that Saddam Hussien helped plan September 11th;" "Weapons of mass destruction were indeed found in Iraq;" and her insistance that Canadians don't know their history, becuase "Canada did send troops to vietnam." Sadly, I know from personal experience a majority of people I've known in the US actually do watch Fox News.  Not only has Fox become a propoganda machine for the Administration, it is influencing other journalists. CBS showed a wonderful segment about a regular joe six-pack, who is in favor of privatization of social security, and went on about how he represents to views of all of america. In an intereview later, even "Mr. Six-pack" was stunned when he watched the article and didn't mention that he was working for a lobby group whose primary focus was, you guessed it, privatization of Social Security.

That said, Fox and Bill O'reilly declined to be interviewed, saying that they are worried that this story would paint them as conservatives, and they are actually Mainstream. As a result, the Fifth Estate wrote Fox, proposing they meet in nuetral territory, have a nice discussion, and both air their own versions of the story for a balanced approach. Then they followed up. Seven months later, they are still waiting.

As a result of this show and this mornings events, I decided to take a look at Fox's website this mornign to get their slant on the news. I won't bother linking the article I read at 9 am this morning, because it's gone. Not a big surprise as it stated that 300 were confimed dead and 900 injured in London due to the Al queda bombings.  At the time of this writing, 1 pm, they have since revised their figures, to 33 confirmed dead, and 360 injured.

Wow, nope .. they don't lie.

Ya know, I understand about griping in regards to calls when you are doing tech support. Hell I've had a few doozies myself.

But, there is complaining, and griping, and then there is over dramatizing every little mistake a user makes to the point where you really have to wonder what credibility the person has. I mean, if you see the same posts over and over again, being abusive and whiney, you begin to wonder if it's true, or just an attention grab.

I've said it before Jun. 10th, 2005 @ 04:36 pm
... and I'll say it again.

Paul Thurrott is one of the biggest flakes to his the tech journalism scene since David Coursey got laughed out of the executive editor position at ZDnet's news desk for doing the exact same thing.

Please note:
1) Do not give me reviews based upon screenshots of a product. While I do care about UI being intuitive, I care if it actually runs too!

2) Information that is mostly a bunch of buzzwords strung together in such a way to vagualy make sense but say nothing is not information

3) Finally, if you give anything like points 1 & 2 to me, or referance any work by the flakes at the top of this page, DO NOT EXPECT me to take you seriously. Or for that matter, acknowledge your existence during that particular interaction. Or remeber that interaction because I want to think better of people.
